The Vibe: Forget standing over a boiling pot and worrying about the "absorption method." This is our go-to family hack for perfect, fluffy Basmati every single time. It frees up your hob for the main event, requires zero "babysitting," and leaves you with just one bowl to rinse. It’s consistent, it’s quick, and it’s a total game-changer for mid-week sanity.
The Kit:
One very large microwave-safe glass or ceramic bowl. (Size matters here—you want plenty of room for the steam to circulate without boiling over!)
The Shopping List:
1 Cup Basmati Rice (Standard mug size is perfect).
2 Cups Cold Water (Use the same mug for perfect ratios).
A pinch of Salt.
A teaspoon of oil or a small knob of butter (Optional—helps keep the grains separate).
The Method (The 12-Minute Magic):
The Rinse: Give the rice a quick rinse in a sieve until the water runs clear. This gets rid of the excess starch that makes rice sticky.
The Assembly: Pop the rinsed rice, the 2 cups of water, and your salt/oil into the large bowl.
The Blast: Place the bowl in the microwave. Do not cover it. Set it to High for 12 minutes.
The Rest: Once the timer pings, leave it in the microwave for another 2–3 minutes. This "resting time" lets the last bit of steam finish the job.
The Fluff: Use a fork to fluff it up. Done.
The "Tinker’s" Flavour Variations: 🌿🧄
Since we aren't sautéing in a pan, here is how we add the "Lorca" lift at the end:
Garlic & Herb: While the rice is resting, stir in a teaspoon of garlic paste and a sprinkle of dried herbs. The heat of the rice will "bloom" the flavours perfectly.
The "Solico" Zest: Stir through a squeeze of lemon juice and some fresh parsley for a Mediterranean vibe.
The Savoury Boost: Use hot chicken or veg stock instead of cold water for the 12-minute blast.
The Chef’s Secret (Pete’s Tip): "Don't be tempted to cover the bowl with a lid or cling film. You want the steam to escape freely so the rice stays fluffy and doesn't turn into a 'rice cake.' And remember—use a bowl much bigger than you think you need to avoid a starchy overflow!"
Mark’s Pairing: "This is so easy it leaves you plenty of time to focus on the main dish—or, better yet, time to prep the dessert! This clean, simple rice is the perfect 'mop' for our 'Midnight' Honey & Garlic Chicken."
